Israel Diorama

Parshat Haazinu

Congratulations to Emily and her family on their Aliyah!
In the second to last Parsha of the Chumash, Moshe looks at what he cannot have.
 Introduction:
At the end of this week’s Parsha, Parshat Haazinu, Moshe is permitted to view the Land of Israel from a distance, since he will die before the Israelites enter:
“That very day the Lord spoke to Moses: Ascend these heights of Abarim to Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab facing Jericho, and view the land of Canaan, which I am giving the Israelites as their holding… You may view the land from a distance, but you shall not enter it — the land that I am giving to the Israelite people.”
The Midrash explains that when Moshe looked into the Land, he had a vision of the entire Jewish future. Have a discussion with your kids about what they think Moshe might have seen – both literally and figuratively. Then, create a diorama to represent his vision. The diorama can represent the physical land of Israel – trees, mountains, rivers, sand, etc. Or, the diorama can represent a vision that Moshe might have had of the future Jewish people or the future State of Israel.
Materials:
A shoe box or packing box
Cardstock paper
Glue
Extras: sand, cotton balls, twigs, flowers, cellophane, magazine clippings, etc.
Directions:
1)    Cut the top off of the box so that it has three sides and a bottom.
2)    Cut paper to cover the back and the bottom of the box.
3)    Cut out shapes for your diorama.
4)    Make a fold on the bottom of each shape and put glue on the bottom of the fold to attach to the box.
5)    Finish your diorama with additional decorations. Add a figure of Moshe if you wish.
*** Inspiration for this project came from my husband (thanks Andy!) and from the hundreds of packing boxes in our new home in Israel!

Parsha Poem: Nitzavim-Vayelech / נִצָּבִים-וַיֵּלֶךְ

DEVARIM/DEUTERONOMY 29:9-31:30

imageThis was the last day of Moshe’s whole life
He’d grown up, he’d left home, he’d taken a wife.
And now he was old; it was time for goodbye,
But instead he was teaching; too busy to cry.
We learn two parshiyot (that’s parshas) this week
Which means lots of lessons we all have to seek.
Nitzavim means standing: we stood and we heard,
But Vayelech means going; it’s kind of absurd.
We’re standing, he’s going – how could we survive,
Without our great teacher who helped us to thrive?
But we don’t need him now, in fact, that’s the point
That’s why a new leader Hashem could anoint.
The Torah was not meant for just holy folks;
It’s written for us, who live lives and tell jokes.
imageSure, Moshe was really a very great man,
But Hashem said, “Don’t worry, there’s someone who can
Take over now and he’ll lead them all well,
As they cross the Yarden and move into Israel.”
But before Moshe finished, he had to act fast,
And teach us to be sure that the Torah would last.
imageHakheil, a mitzvah to gather and hear it
So we’d keep it and love it and always be near it.
But it’s not enough to just listen alone,
Every Jew must make sure that the Torah’s their own.
Its very last mitzvah commands us to write
A Torah of our very own, day and night.
imageIf we can’t do the job, if we’re not qualified,
Sofer, a scribe, we will need on our side.
To write a whole Torah is no easy task –
It takes years and costs money (better you shouldn’t ask!).
But if we all gather a dollar or two,
We can participate in the mitzvah; it’s true.
We also “write Torahs” when we buy Jewish books,
To read them and learn them, not just for their looks.
The Torah is not in Shamayim, they say…
The Torah is for every Jew, every day!

During Yom Kippur it is forbidden to wear leather shoes so slippers or canvas shoes are often worn instead. Include your child in this holiday tradition by helping them create Yom Kippur slippers that are permissible to wear and fun to decorate. If you find the cardboard recommended in this pattern too difficult to work with we suggest using craft foam as it’s more pliable and at times easier to cut than cardboard.
Jonah and the Whale (switch out boat for man)
Prayer Sticks: popsicle stick with picture of family member or friend. Each day have child (or you) draw a name and you both pray for that person.
I thought this would be fun to do with the kids .... since we pray alot of Yom kippur I will post my own pics of these projects as we do them.... both of these cam from pintrest.

Yom Terruah

Yom terruah ( feast of trumpets) is quickly aproching and it is time to think for my family at least, what we need to do.

lets first talk about this feast, Yom Terruah is my personal favorite feast. mostly because it has alot of things to do with kids and is a very active holiday plus I love fall.
some great books I use every year for getting me ready for this feast are ....

you can get this book on amazon for around 30.00 it sounds expensive but trust me it is worth the money I use it for all the holidays and I love how it is laid out and all the information in there. it is a great book and you and your family will love it.

there are crafts, recipes and puzzles in there and info on how to celebrate the holidays and fun decorations you can make for each holiday.

This is another great book I love for the feast and actually has one of my favorite recipes for Yom Turrah in it. I read this book every year to make sure I have all I need for the feasts and help me get in the right mind set. again it has crafts for kids, how to celebrate it and recipes. This is the number one book I recommend for someone who is just learning about Hebrew roots and how to celebrate the holidays for the first time.

this book runs on amazon for 12.00 or 10 in kindle I have both since I tend to lend this book out alot then have to beg for it back around this time of year.

Here are a list of Children's books for Yom Terruah and Yom Kippur....
